Copywriting and Cranford - Knutsford, Cheshire

Buzzwords is based in the same Cheshire town

where Victorian novelist Elizabeth Gaskell set

her famous Cranford novels...

Maybe there's something in the air in Knutsford.  Maybe there's something in the atmosphere of this Cheshire market town that inspires authors and copywriters alike to perform miracles, albeit in different fields and in totally different eras!

There's no doubt that Elizabeth Gaskell is enjoying a new surge of popularity since the BBC screened 'Cranford' in 2007, complete with star-studded cast and authentic period settings in a carefully chosen Wiltshire location.

The news that the BBC will be screening a documentary and, very likely, celebrations marking the bi-centenary of Elizabeth Gaskell's birth, will serve only to enhance the reputation of this admired Victorian novelist.  A wonderfully accurate observer of social niceties and the fascinating dynamics of life in a small country town, Elizabeth Gaskell deserves her belated recognition.

It's easy to lament her lost world of perfect manners and protocols.  And yet, we must never forget how social progress has 'rescued' generations of people from harsh, impoverished lives through better health, social security and education.

Copywriting is of course an integral part of our commercially-facing modern world.  And the truth is, with the Internet invading (and serving) everyone's lives wherever they are in the world, the elegant writing style of our Victorian forebears looks decidedly long-winded alongside the sound bites and headlines of the modern day.

Quaint or not, there's something about Elizabeth Gaskell, Cranford et al that transcends the need for brevity.  Maybe it's an antidote for not having 'time to stand and stare'.  More likely, it's part of the timeless timeline where masterful use is made of the English language - as realised (in one small way) through the best of commercial copywriting across all modern media.
