An effective SEO link building tool to boost your

website ranking - and make powerful PR points too!

There's a lot of talk about article marketing, but what's it all about?  Submitting articles to the media is nothing new, of course.  Article marketing isn't that new either, but if you're not sure about what it is - and how powerful it is as a PR and SEO tool - then you've come to the right place.

Article marketing is all about submitting articles to online article publishers such as ezinearticles.com.  (In the wake of Google's 'Panda Updates' to their web page ranking criteria - and the subsequent downgrading of certain article directories from an SEO point of view - an interesting development has been the increased popularity of 'guest blogging' and writing articles for niche online publications.)

Article directories (and others) will publish your article for free.  In exchange, the article is then made available to other website owners or online publishers of newsletters, e-zines and so on for re-printing (unless you've agreed to offer your article as an 'exclusive' to a single publisher).  The benefit for article writers is that anyone who publishes your article is obliged to include a link back to your website via a URL which you provide at the bottom of your article in what's known as a 'Resource Box'.

Long before the Internet, people have written and published articles in the media to promote their companies, products and services. Article marketing is doing the same thing - except it's done online.

In addition, there is one extra, irresistible reason for submitting your articles to online publishers. That, as we've seen, is the inbound links that are generated by anyone who reproduces your articles. For every article published, you 'earn' another link back to your website!

The greater the number of inbound links pointing back to your website, the more 'authority' it will have in the eyes of search engines like Google. From a search engine optimisation (SEO) point of view, article marketing is one of the most important and effective tools available to you that will improve your website's rankings for the keywords of your choice.

Article marketing: how it works

  • Write articles of 500 words-plus in which you provide useful and interesting information about your company, its products and services

  • At the end of the article, you include your website's URL in what's known as a 'Resource Box'

  • In the article title, in the opening paragraph and throughout the article, include the keyword of your choice. This is effectively a piece of SEO.

  • Simply follow the guidance of the online publisher about how to submit and format your article. This is a simple A-B-C process.

The benefits & the bonuses

There are dozens of online publishers, each offering opportunities for publishing articles in various categories. In theory, whoever publishes your article will be giving your website one 'link'. In reality, it's better to submit articles to publishers with a higher Google PageRank (such as Ezinearticles).

That's because the link will be seen as 'higher quality' and will therefore carry more weight from an SEO viewpoint. There is also a greater likelihood that a higher number of secondary publishers will see your article and reproduce it on their own sites (thus creating a 'snowball' effect). A single article has the potential to be reproduced dozens of times if it's of enough interest, well written and optimised.

An extra bonus is that readers of your article will see you as an 'expert' (and maybe get in touch and generate new business for you!). And if you write and publish a large enough number of quality articles, you'll begin to be seen as a real authority in your niche! If these are also published on your own website, you'll have some excellent content that is optimised too (which will further enhance your SEO efforts and page rankings).

About the Resource Box

This is probably the most important part of your article because it contains your all-important URL that will create links back to your website each time the article is reproduced. (It's a condition of use that whoever uses your free article must include the URL in fair exchange!)

The Resource Box also gives you a unique opportunity to include a potted biography of yourself, your company and your skills/services. In other words, it's a golden opportunity to sell yourself - so the words used should be well chosen (and probably include additional keywords). You can also use the Resource Box to sell things like your e-book, membership subscriptions or special offers.

The URL you include in your Resource Box can (and maybe should) be for a specific page on your website. This effectively becomes a landing page whose content (and keywords) most closely mirror the content in your article. It will also have the effect of generating additional links to that particular page and therefore improve the rankings associated with the keywords featured there.

Article marketing: how Buzzwords can do it for you

If you're new to article marketing, you may be interested in Buzzwords' 'starter service'. This includes writing your articles as required. It involves advising on submissions to online publishers: where to submit and the best ways of doing it. Ongoing support is also provided - as much or as little as you need. Finally, competitive fees are available for one-off writing and advisory services that set you on your way to independent article marketing and link building. Or, if you prefer, a monthly retainer fee is also available as part of an ongoing commitment.
